Dollar Bank Earns ABA Honorable Mention for Virginia Financial Inclusion Efforts
Recognizing the impact of our partnership with Educational Services of Hampton Roads, Inc. and the dedication of mentor-leader Dr. Tyrone Davis.
Dollar Bank has been recognized by the American Bankers Association (ABA) with Honorable Mention in the Financial Inclusion category at the 2025 Community Commitment Awards. This national recognition highlights our deep commitment to supporting meaningful community programs and engaging with underserved individuals to help build financial stability, stronger families and brighter futures for all.
This honor is particularly meaningful as it was given in recognition of one of our most impactful partnerships in Hampton Roads, Virginia — the Fatherhood Mentoring Program for formerly incarcerated individuals in partnership with our friends at the Portsmouth Dept. of Social Services (DSS) and Educational Services of Hampton Roads, Inc. (ESHR). Thanks to this collaboration, men returning to society have access to life-changing support including learning trades, gaining business skills, building financial literacy, planning for homeownership and reconnecting with their children. The program has been around for 14 years with Dr. Davis leading three sessions a year with 25 participants per session.
Key highlights of the program:
- A 10-week hybrid curriculum (in-person and virtual) offered three times a year to men re-entering society through incarceration.
- Focus not only on employment/trade skills and entrepreneurship, but also on personal finance, homeownership and generational wealth building.
- Participation is free of charge for eligible men in the City of Portsmouth, thanks to our collaboration with Portsmouth DSS and ESHR.
We’re excited to take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on the outstanding leadership of Dr. Tyrone Davis, President of ESHR, who has been instrumental in organizing, guiding and championing this program. His dedication and belief in creating opportunities have helped turn vision into action and make a real, measurable difference in so many lives.
“The value of this program for the young men and women who participate is the access to lifelong learning opportunities for financial education and generational wealth. We focus on their future; their pasts are not held against them. We want them to realize that the best is yet to come and help them to leave the world better than they found it, and we do this with help from Dollar Bank.”
This ABA recognition is a public validation of the power of this program, but the real success is seen in strong parental bonds, better economic outcomes and reintegration into society with dignity and purpose.
"The Fatherhood Mentoring Program is a powerful example of what happens when organizations truly collaborate,” said James Hinton Jr., Vice President of Community Development. “At Dollar Bank, our values call us to work together and create respectful, empathetic spaces where everyone feels included and supported. Through this partnership, we’re helping individuals navigate new beginnings and building stronger communities in the process. We’re honored to receive this recognition from the American Bankers Association and to stand alongside Dr. Tyrone Davis and his life-changing program.”
Please join us in congratulating the Community Development team in Dollar Bank’s Virginia Division, our partners at Portsmouth DSS, ESHR and especially Dr. Tyrone Davis for their exceptional work. Together, we’re making a meaningful difference!
