Mortgage Application Checklist

Whether you’re buying a new home or refinancing your existing home, applying for a mortgage can be both exciting and overwhelming. Once you have selected a lender, you’ll need to set up a time with a mortgage representative to complete your application.

In addition to reviewing and signing any necessary documentation with your mortgage representative, you’ll also need to present verification of your income, assets and other financial information.

To help you prepare for the process, below is a comprehensive checklist of what is generally needed when you apply for a mortgage. If you have these items with you, it will help make your application process easier!

 

Information needed for all applicants:

  • Personal address (2-year history)
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of employers (2-year history)
  • Most recent paystub for the past 30 days supporting year-to-date earnings
  • W-2s (2-year history)
  • If you’re self-employed: Personal and business tax returns with all schedules (2-year history)
  • If you’re using funds from Social Security/Retirement/Pension Income: Award letter, 1099 or W-2 for the most recent year and proof of current receipt
  • Last two months’ complete bank statements for all accounts that are being used for the mortgage application; Any large deposits to be fully documented
  • If you’re using funds from a gift: Donor’s name, address and phone number
  • Appraisal Fee: Credit card or check made payable to Dollar Bank


If you’re purchasing a home:

  • Sales agreement signed by all parties


If you’re refinancing your mortgage:

  • Copy of current Homeowners Insurance Declaration Page
  • Year-end mortgage statement from current lender or paid Real Estate tax receipts if you do not currently escrow

In general, when you apply for a mortgage, bring anything that can be photocopied and used to verify your income, assets and obligations. It will significantly speed up the processing of your application.
